THE NEW KOLB AIRCRAFT CO.
8375 RUSSELL DYCHE HWY., LONDON, KY 40741, USA 606-862-9692 About Us30 Years of Distinguished Service ! ![]() In 1980, the Kolb Aircraft Company, introduced the Kolb Flyer. The Flyer was known to be lighter than its pilot making this airplane one of the first ultralight on the US market. In the same period, hang-gliders and other weight shift aircrafts were starting to attract a lot of interest in the aviation community. Kolb's motivation was to create an ultralight that would fly like a regular airplane in which pilots would feel comfortable with a 3 axes flight control system. Using standard aircraft material of the time (4130 steel tubes, aluminum and fabric), the Kolb Aircraft Company introduced, during the following years, different models that would mark the era of light aircraft all around the world. Since then, more than 3,000 airplanes have been delivered world wide. In 1999, the company was purchased by a group of investors in London, Kentucky and became The New Kolb Aircraft Company. Under the management of this group, The New Kolb Aircraft Co. has introduced on the market 2 new models; the Mark III Xtra and the Kolbra. Both of these airplanes have stirred up media interest since their first appearance in 2000.In July 2008, The New Kolb Aircraft Co. introduced its first Special Light Sport Aircraft complying with the ASTM/LSA standards. The Kolb Flyer Super Sport is a result of 3 years of design and development. The project takes its origins from a strategic alliance between The New Kolb Aircraft Co. in the US, Ultravia Aero inc. from Canada and Flyer Industria Aeronautica LTDA from Brazil. Originally, the purpose of the alliance was to produce, promote and distribute the Pelican Sport 600 as a Light Sport Aircraft in the USA. Between 2003 and 2005, The New Kolb Aircraft Co. displayed the Pelican Sport 600 at Oshkosh and Lakeland and collected visitor's comments. Although the Pelican aircraft beneficiated from a very good reputation and more than 700 units were flying worldwide in both, micro light and experimental categories, these surveys underlined several issues in relation with the flight and ergonomic characteristics of the aircraft. In 2006, The New Kolb Aircraft Co. purchased the assets of Ultravia which included the intellectual rights of the Pelican line of aircrafts and a new alliance was then formed between The New Kolb Aircraft Co. and Flyer Industria Aeronautica LTDA in Brazil to design a new Light Sport Aircraft using the Pelican as a platform but addressing all the comments and issues collected during the AirVenture, at Oshkosh and Sun 'n Fun, Lakeland air shows.
The Kolb Flyer Super Sport is the creation of an International effort but is certainly and without any doubt, an all American Breed in all senses of the words. While the aircraft's fuselage, which weighs only 35 kilogram (77 lbs), is made from aerospace grade carbon fiber, the wings and tails feathers are made from 6061-T6 and 2024-T3 aluminum. The wing's struts are attached to the fuselage behind the doors which gives a better and more comfortable access to the cabin. The seats are electric and are actuated from the push of a rocker switch in the center console as we could find in a luxury car. Here are some of the design's characteristics:
• Frise ailerons The New Kolb Aircraft Co. is located in London, Kentucky, and produces a line of light sport and ultralight aircrafts. The company started over 30 years ago, by Homer Kolb, is one on the oldest kit manufactures of experimental light aircraft in the world. Airplane structure and systems
Resin infusion moulded composite structure consisting of a carbon fiber/epoxy resin laminate with rigid PVC, birch plywood and balsa cores.
The all-metal wing is a single-strut, single spar construction, covered with aluminum skins. The horizontal empennage features a cantilever stabilizer structure covered with aluminum and with fibreglass tips. The vertical tail, ailerons, flaps and elevator are also aluminum covered. Ailerons, elevator are mass balanced.
The airplane features dual control sticks, dual rudder pedals and a dual differential braking system. The Frise Ailerons are deflected through a bellcrank / pushrod mechanism mounted on ball bearings. The Fowler flaps are operated by a torque tube connected to an electric motor. Ailerons deflect 30° up and 17° down and flaps 40°. The rudder is cable operated while the elevator is operated via a set of 2 push-pull tubes connected by a central bellcrank. The trim tab is controlled by an electric servo motor.
The main Wittman type landing gear legs are made of heat-treated 6150 HR steel rods, faired with fibreglass. The system consists of a right and a left leg, bolted in two landing gear sockets located at each end on an extruded aluminum carry through square tube laminated in place in the bottom of the fuselage. The nose gear leg is made in the same fashion as the main gear but with a different camber. The wheel is mounted in an aluminum fork and suspension is provided by natural leg bending. The nose wheel is free and can rotate 360°.
Cleveland 5 inch wheels and brakes with 5.00*5 tires are used for all three wheels. Brakes are toe operated and the KOLB FLYER SS offers differential braking from pilot and passenger seats.
The flaps are electrically operated by an electric actuator. The flap control is located in the center console. They offer 5 positions from -4° to 40°.
One elevator trim, electrically operated, that combines as an anti-servo tab. Fixed trims are used for the rudder and the ailerons.
Two seats, side by side and adjustable, leather seat cushions, dual sticks, dual pedals, center console, top hinged bubble doors, blown acrylic windshield, windows and skylights, baggage compartment accessible via a cargo door on the pilot's side and over the central bulkhead. Three-point seat belts - shoulder harness for both seats.
The two seats are moving forward and aft and are electrically actuated. The control is done via a rocker switch located between the two seats on the center console.

Become a Pilot
The dream of becoming a pilot is an exciting professional goal. It requires dedication, perseverance, stamina, endurance, specialized knowledge in the science of aviation, and a willingness to embrace a hectic lifestyle. For those who possess these qualities, aviation is an unbelievably rewarding and satisfying profession.
For anyone aspiring to become a licensed airline pilot, there are certain steps to be taken both in Canada and in the United States before this goal can be achieved. In both countries, a pilot must first obtain a commercial pilot license with a multi-engine/instrument rating in order to act as a co-pilot in an airline aircraft. To act as a captain, a pilot must hold additionally a valid airline transport pilot license, obtained after a total cumulative flying experience of 1,500 and a successfully completed written exam administered by the FAA or by Transport Canada.
Prospects for Future Employment :Although there are traditional steps in place that lead to the issuance of both an airline transport pilot license (ATP) and a commercial pilot license, both Canada and the USA have, within the past several years, adopted an integrated pilot training program which incorporates both of these licensures into a single structured training program. (In the USA, refer to Part 141 flying schools.) Throughout his/her career, an airline pilot continues to evolve. As a co-pilot in a small airplane, he/she will, through accumulated hours of flight, gain the knowledge and experience that will eventually allow him/her to advance to the position of captain. Later, he/she may move on to piloting larger aircraft where he/she has an opportunity to act as either a co-pilot or as captain. These advancements are determined by the current needs of the individual airline company as well as by the specific training courses that company offers to its pilots. Recent and rapid technological advances have allowed for the accelerated development of new and innovative aircrafts. Continuing education is crucial for the pilot who wishes to climb the hierarchical and corporate ladder. In 2001, an industry survey released by the ATAC showed that commercial pilots working in the aeronautics industry had, by percentage, attained the following levels of education:
A career as a commercial pilot opens the door to employment in a variety of fields: agriculture, aerial photography, law enforcement, television and broadcasting, corporate transportation, educational flight instruction, commuter flights, etc. Listed below are the licenses that will allow a pilot to earn a salary while flying:
Compensation:
In the airline industry, compensation is based on the length of the flight, the size of the aircraft, and the type of rotation. The larger the plane and the farther it flies, the greater the salary. Salary schedules will vary between companies. In most large companies, a beginning pilot can expect a starting salary of approximately $40,000 per year. As experience and tenure with the company advances, so will the salary. Within twelve years, pilots who began with a salary of $40,000 per year can expect to gross approximately $150,000 per year.
Worldwide, the aviation industry is facing a huge challenge. Pilots trained during the post war era are retiring at an unprecedented rate leaving "empty seats" at the controls of thousands of aircrafts. Add to that the development of the very light jet (VLJ) and the growth of the aero-taxi industry that will bring several thousand new aircrafts into the market all of which will require the specialized skills of highly trained professionals such as pilots, dispatchers, maintenance engineers and client services personnel. Aerospace giant, Boeing Co. estimates the global appetite for new pilots will number 17,000 per year through 2024.
